First Grade is all about Reading ~ and lots of other activities too! The main focus for students is becoming independent in reading, reading comprehension, and learning through reading. There are many ways that parents can help with this process. The MOST IMPORTANT thing that a parent can do is find time every day to read with your child. Take turns reading - have your child read a "little book" to you, and then you read a book to your child. Also, talk about the books you read. What happened? Why? What do you think about the book? Did it make you laugh? Think?
If you make this part of your daily routine, both you and your child will look forward to it, and your child will improve as a reader as well.
